I wanted to share some more details in the girls’ room makeover so I thought I would show how my daughter and I made the artwork and how I painted the antique wash stand.
I could not figure out what to do in the room for art, then I ran across this photo and knew immediately what I wanted. Since Evelyn loves origami, I asked if she would make some origami cranes.

I started with this print I bought about 10 years ago at Family Dollar for $10. The art is printed on something like Masonite. I painted the frame first starting with a layer of flat black craft paint, then dry-brushing on silver, then a final wash of gold.
I then painted on the masonite starting with black at the bottom and white at the top. I brushed it all together in the middle until I got the look of graduated color I wanted. I didn’t get a photo of that stage.
We decided to add the cranes all going in the same direction with like ones together. I used just a little spot of hot glue to attach them.
I thought they needed to “fly” outside the frame, so I attached three just outside on the wall.
I have never been so pleased with an art project. I love the 3-D look it has and it really adds something unique to the room. I love that my daughter and I made it together:-)
The art is over the antique wash stand my grandmother gave me, and it really got a makeover. I wasn’t sure what to do with it and really didn’t want it to be white, so while spray painting some hardware for the vanity, I picked up the can and decided to try painting it metallic silver.
I used Rustoleum Bright Coat Metallic Silver. I LOVE this paint and how it covers so well.
I LOVED the result immediately and it really took only one coat of paint. I dry brushed on gold craft paint in some of the grooves, at my dad’s suggestion, and that really gave it the detail it needed.
Here is how the wash stand started out. My grandmother had painted it white, so I painted if off white and had it that way for years until I decided to strip it down for Evelyn.
I could not believe all the colors I found underneath. Because the wood was not in good shape, and there were different woods used, I decided to paint it pink.
It was like this for the last couple years.
Obviously the pink didn’t work in the new room, so I’m glad I decided on silver. I love how it looks.
I put back the glass knobs I bought for the last makeover.
I decided to use this newer lamp of my husband’s — really liking the modern touch it brings.
I am really pleased with how the art and the wash stand turned out and how they enhance the French feel of the room. These unique touches are the things that can really make an ordinary room special.
