Smoky Mountain autumn

Autumn here in the Smoky mountains is an amazing feast for the senses, and one I look forward to with child-like anticipation every year.

We mostly have trees that turn yellow around our house and a few maples that will be fiery orange by next week.

The dogwoods are still wearing brilliant red leaves — even after the storms, rain and high winds we had for several days.

Although I love the clear, Carolina blue skies that come with fall, I also love foggy fall mornings, and this morning was just perfect.

I shot the next photos a couple days ago on the Blue Ridge Parkway near Balsam. There were several layers of fast moving fog, and I was able to get some quick shots.

Although pretty much all the color is gone above 4,000 feet, it is still breathtakingly beautiful with plenty of color left below.

I just love these mountains…

…and never grow tired of their ever-changing beauty.

I used a Canon Rebel EOS T3 with a Canon 20mm lens for these shots.

Makes me want to return and drive the BR Parkway and Skyline Drive again…about my favorite place in all the earth, except for our wonderful Ozarks (which really seem much like the Appalachians, just not as steep.) We were there last in 2010, and I love remembering so many neat things we saw: farmers picking pumpkins, the apple orchard at Altapass, with fresh-pressed cider and hot, delicious apple turnovers, the old abandoned homesteads that whisper stories when you stop to listen, a lovely yarn shop in Meadows of Dan where I bought some locally-spun wool (love the name "Meadows of Dan"!), visiting with the young park ranger at Mabry's Mill who was quilting outside one of the cabins…she had moved the quilt frame out because it was such a beautiful day. It's so nice to see a young person plying a needle. 🙂 I love your photos of your beautiful surroundings and know that you appreciate daily the place in which you are allowed to live. Me, too..

I love the mountains here too Anita. Your photos are stunning and you captured fall here perfectly. You asked if my property is near where I am now. No, it is over by Forest City in Rutherford county. The view from our property goes for miles and we can actually see Mount Mitchell on a clear day. Thanks for the info on the builder, but we have one in mind that built a house we lived in a few years back.
