I don’t know what it is this year, but it sure seems Christmas is creeping up — at warp speed, so I need to share my Christmas posts before it’s too late!
Our kitchen definitely has a different look this Christmas thanks to the fabric I used for curtains and the sink skirt. It’s merry, bright, kid friendly and we are loving it:-)
I had made the window panels for the bathroom several years ago and thought they would add a festive touch here. The sink skirt is part of one I also made several years ago for the “English cottage kitchen” but I took off the layer of toile and changed the dark blue ticking to a lighter blue.
My grandmother’s Christmas apron is hanging next to a French tea towel and red-striped feedsack towel.
Probably my most treasured Christmas items are my grandmother’s vintage Commodore Candy Cane and “spaghetti” angel candle holders. She always had them on her dining room window sill, and I keep them here in the kitchen.
The tartan made its way here as a bow on the silver tray.
The Santa with sleigh is from my childhood and although he is missing his reindeer, I still love him. The plastic Santa belonged to my grandmother and I just added vintage Shiny Brites and “snow” to the Mason jar.
The little Santa salt and pepper shakers belonged to my grandmother also, and my mother just gave them to me this year.
I shared in another post the gingerbread decorating fun I had with my children and my niece over Thanksgiving. I certainly am enjoying the little house and cookies. I’m sure we will be doing it again next year:-)
I just kept some of the milk glass and ironstone I had and added the vintage needlepoints and a feedsack balsam potpourri my grandmother made for me years ago.
If you’ve been here before, you know I love a Charlie Brown tree. Here is another little hemlock seeding in a vinegar bottle with Shiny Brites and a tartan ribbon.
A big Christmas tradition here is my mom’s amazing fruit cake. I don’t have words for how good it is. I will say, I have tried store bought and some other homemade cakes, and I understand why people don’t like fruit cake:-) This is so different. Moist, fruity and just all around amazing. I could have *did* eat it for breakfast:-) Maybe once — or twice.
Stepping away from the cake —
Another of my grandmother’s aprons hangs on the old screen door.
I have loved so much using vintage calendars — especially Currier and Ives. Once you figure out the corresponding year, it’s easy to find a match. I don’t have a 1959 one, though, so I better start looking.
I found this little deer in the smokehouse and assumed it was used for some kind of display in my grandfather’s store, but after I posted it, my mom saw it and told me she had made it in Bible School about 60 years ago!! I added some of my grandmother’s Christmas decorations and the old Prince Albert cans. My grandfather’s basket holds balsam and white pine cuttings.
It has been fun to bring out some of the things I had put away, like my red check napkins:-)
I’m enjoying the festive atmosphere we have going on in here this year with the touches of red, but it’s really the excitement of the season I enjoy most. Quite honestly, when I think of a farmhouse Christmas kitchen, it has to be the one I remember my grandmother standing in cooking biscuits, gravy, eggs, and my favorite — red-eye gravy for all of us grandchildren. Aren’t the wonderful memories such an important part of Christmas?
You can see last year’s pink Christmas kitchenHERE.
I’ll be sharing something every day this week, then I’ll put it all into one home tour Monday:-) Thanks for stopping by our Christmas kitchen!!
I’ll be joining:
