I have been without a long box on the dining table since I sold my big one last year, so I decided it was time to do something similar again.
I brought out this box I made from a newel post from the old house and filled it with succulents.
I lined the inside with a triple layer of plastic and filled it with potting mix especially for succulents.
I lined up my plants, then filled in around them with pea gravel, which I am using with all my plants lately.
I prefer the cleaner look of the gravel as opposed to the spanish moss I used to use.
I did some research on caring for succulents so I hope I can keep these alive.
I *adore* live plants and love having them around the house.
To make this box, I simply took off one side of the four-sided post, left the cap on top, and added the top from another post to the other end.
It worked great and is a wonderful way to repurpose this piece of my dad’s past.
I love the wood against the Afghan kilim runner.
It used to look like this, but was too wide, so I literally cut the sides off.
Lucky for me, I cut along a finished edge, so I didn’t have to serge or hem the edges.
I love how it looks and will be a little more versatile.
I love the simple, rustic look of the dining area and love seeing my happy little plants:-) Do you have any tips for growing succulents you’d like to share with me?
I’ll be joining:
I love the first picture, reminds me of the southwest and especially the pattern of the kilim. If I recall, succulents doesn't take much water and I used cactus soil. I like how you add family treasures ( like the box ), and anything that has a personal meaning to you in your home.

Thank you Kathleen! I love things that mean something to me:-)
Anita, I plan to plant succulents in a long planter outdoors this weekend. Love the look of a long box on your table. '-)
That sounds pretty Sarah!! Thank you:-)
Succulents do not like to be overwatered…so a little water once a week is suffice. Love the decor!
Thank you Veronica!! I'm hoping to keep them living as long as I can:-)
A great idea, and it looks lovely in your home.
