I’m not sure I have ever been as excited to get something in the mail as I was this rug. My friends at Unique Rug Store offered me the opportunity for another rug, and I already knew what I wanted — a “rose” kilim or Karabakh kilim. I knew what I wanted because I obsess over the rugs they offer and spend an insane amount of time virtually shopping the site:-)
What’s not to love about this? I fell hard for these last year when I first looked through the selections at Unique Rug Store, but since my heart was set on an overdyed rug, I chose the fuchsia, as well as a beige one. Since I recently moved the fuchsia rug into the dining space, I needed something bold to define and ground the living area. So I started browsing the rose kilims at Unique Rug Store.
I love Turkish rugs, especially, and I would probably have them everywhere if budget were no issue. There are so many styles to choose from, and I thought it was time for something different in this living space. Luckily, with neutral furniture, walls and window treatments, I can pretty much do anything with the floor coverings in here.
I also wanted to make a statement, and I’m pretty sure this does that:-)
Here is a little bit of info about the Karabakh style rug…
According to this site, “Karabakh kilims come from a region in Southern Caucasia where Armenians and Azerbaijani Turks lived together for centuries. The region has a very old history of rug weaving, historical records dates back to 13th century. Karabagh kilims rugs are usually made in large sizes and mostly the main colors are black and red, beside black and red many different colors could be used such as green, brown, yellow and pink. Common patterns used on Karabagh rugs are roses, flowers and plants. These kilim rugs have charming, flamboyant looks.”
Definitely charming and flamboyant, this rug has everything I love — a story, history, color and pattern.
One thing to keep in mind when purchasing a vintage or handmade rug is size. I have an aversion to “floating” rugs that are too small for a space, so the way I get around some of the unique sizing in vintage rugs is by layering them on top of another rug. In this case, I have a 8′ x 10′ jute rug, which is perfect for layering the 6’6″ x 9’9″ rose kilim on top. Another thing to keep in mind with kilims is they need a really good rug pad or another rug underneath as they are thin.
Do I love this rug? I’m honestly a little crazy and obsessed with it. It’s actually much more beautiful in person than it was online, and offers so many styling opportunities. I think I could use it in every space in my house, and it would look amazing. It’s a show stealer, though. It needs to stand out and not compete with too much else in a space, which is why the mostly neutral backdrop works so well.
I am so thankful to work with such a wonderful people, and nothing makes me happier than having something authentic and direct from the source. I hope to encourage you to buy those special things for your home *not* from the big box stores or online retailers, but from small businesses that offer handcrafted items that will stand the test of time and outlive trends. That makes your home stand out from the rest, but most importantly, is what makes your homes’s story uniquely yours.
So please go by and browse the amazing rugs at Unique Rug Store. They offer free shipping, and you can be assured that you will have purchased something that can be passed down and treasured for years to come. I know I’ll be doing some more browsing and dreaming:-)

Hi Anita,
Your living-room is amazing and you moldavian rose kilim is fabulous. In fact your rug is a vintage Moldavian traditional rug. The one that you have has been woven in the north of the country, I can see it by the floral patterns that are specific to each region.
These rose kilim rugs are large and extra-large size because they have been used as tapestry, aimed to cover the entire wall on which they were hanged. They are not produced any longer since the ’90, as the local demand for such rugs collapsed, people don’t use tapestries any more nowadays, they prefer wallpapers.
When they were in vogue, these rugs costed a fortune.
Does your better half appreciate having a rose kilim rug in the living-room? I had clients who returned the floral kilim rugs they purchased on my e-shop and that they loved because their husband didn’t like the idea of having a rose kilim rug in the house, too girly for them.
"Thanks so much for the info! Of course the info I have about the rug was from the sellers in Turkey, but have also done a little research myself. According to my seller, "the rugs come from Moldavia and near the Black Sea. Rose kilim rugs have mostly red roses with dark background. Moldovan karabah kilims are getting more and more hard to find." So is it not a Karabakh? In any case, I love it and my husband loves it as well, but then he also loves the fuchsia overdyed rug:-)

Great Moldovan Kilims! Because of background color, they are not popular but workmanship is wonderful. We have many pillows made with Moldovan Kilims in our shop as well. somkilimpillows.com
