I struggled to get my porch decorated this year. With other design projects going on, combined with my own indecisiveness, I honestly thought I’d not get anything done.
I had this vision of using different colors and sizes of Mason jars with candles to bring in something different. But I never liked the result, although it did look cool at night with the battery-powered candles lit up.
I really wanted to use what I had on hand, which included orange pumpkins we grew from a leftover from last year. I didn’t buy mums, but planned on using the zinnias my mom grew.
Then everything froze. So, I tried again:-)
I just stacked up everything I had on each side and called it good.
I made the bows from burlap ribbon and strips of fabric that I ripped. I finished them off with raffia.
Funny enough when my camera battery died, I took a few phone pics, which really captured more of the essence of what it really looked like with the afternoon sun coming through the trees.
At the top of the steps I hung up some indian corn, a gourd my grandfather carved out, an antique lantern and tied some corn stalks on the side of the old wagon wheel.
I still love the old bed springs I found here.
Really, though, after all the stress trying to come up with something for the porch, I realized it’s about this view right here in the North Carolina mountains.
No decor can compete with nature:-)

I love, love what you did with your porch this fall!! Everything about it is just perfect. I adore Zinnias, and they really pop next to the orange pumpkins. Also, the Zinnias are lovely in your vintage orchard baskets. The mason jar candles on every step are just right with the rustic bows and corn stalks. I also like the addition of your nice, full ferns because there is still plenty of green in autumn, isn't there? You outdid yourself this year, Anita. 🙂
I agree that we can't possible compete with nature's beauty — your mountain views are wonderful. We usually drive up there in the fall, and we haven't had a chance yet this year. Maybe this weekend. Have a great day!

Thank you so very much Denise!! I am a big fan of green with autumn too, and always think that is the little detail that keeps the browns feeling alive. You should see some great color still hanging on although I'm sure the higher elevations on the parkway are gone, but there is still plenty to see:-)

Your porch for Fall is always spectacular!!!…Isn't it funny how the phone can capture such a different look? The new phones do take amazing photos…and yes, you are so right…no decor can compete with the beauty of nature…but then again, yours come pretty close!!! 🙂

Amen, sister! NO decor can compete with what God has given us to enjoy on a daily basis! Even weird, eerie stuff like fog. There's still a mystic beauty about it. I didn't realize you get freezing weather in North Carolina. AS a Midwesterner, I suppose I just have fantasies built up in my head about how warm it is in the South. Despite your initial setbacks, your porch turned out like the absolute wonder everything you do is! Lush and warm and inviting!!! I really like the gourd your Grandfather carved out. It reminds me of the spoons cowboys would use to dip water out of the well bucket in movies!
Lol, you always encourage *and* you make me laugh!! Yes, we are at 3,500 feet so we definitely get snow and freezing temps in the winter. My husband's first few winters here were unbearable as we had snow and temps in the teens what seemed like the entire winter. His Puerto Rican blood just could not handle that, lol. Yes, the gourd — I wonder if that's what he did with it? I"ll have to ask my dad:-)
The porch is just beautiful … love the corn stalks and the tied bows…All so picture perfect!! 🙂 as always!!! We just got back home (to Florida) yesterday…. 10 glorious days in the mountains of NC. & Tn… absolutely wonderful…. the colors this year were so brilliant!! The foothills parkway … the lower elevations of the parkway and even all the way up to Blowing Rock !! We try to get to the mountains every year.. so when a fall season like this one "Shows off" we are beyond happy !!!!
