It certainly seems like this season is flying by at warp speed, so I got myself together and set my Thanksgiving table.
I went super simple this year, mainly because I wanted to use the dinner plates I found at Walmart earlier this fall.
I thought these were perfect for the Thanksgiving feast because of the size and way they are shaped around the edges. No gravy will be dripping from the sides of these! I am also in love with square plates.
These are the Better Homes and Gardens porcelain dinner plates and they run about $3.98. I bought them because I already had the square salad plates from a restaurant, and a few BHG bowls.
I used the square rattan chargers I bought from Overstock years ago and added Mikasa Italian Countryside flatware, napkins I made and Anchor Hocking glassware I also got from Walmart this summer. Or was it Libby? I can’t actually remember because they don’t have them anymore.
I made the napkins as well and used the napkin rings I got at Bed, Bath and Beyond, also years ago.
For a centerpiece, I borrowed my mom’s inherited brass and crystal punch bowl and filled it with leaves from the woods. I did place wet floral foam inside so I could give the arrangement some shape and kept it low enough to see over.
I placed it on the board I always use along with some pine cones and Fostoria Baroque candlesticks.
I loved having all this color, and as much as I love the cream overdyed rug, I felt it was a little stark with everything else, so I got a smaller Afghan Kazak rug from ecarpetgallery on ebay to layer on top, and that was just enough to ground everything for me.
And the verdict on the black modern chairs, is that everyone *loves* them. They are the most comfy dining chairs we have had, so we are looking forward to enjoying them for a while next Thursday. The bench will also go away, and be replaced by the chairs.
Just in case you’re wondering, we will eat buffet style, and all the food will be placed on my island for folks to help themselves. I honestly do not like to serve family style because it impedes the conversation if someone is always asking for something to be passed. Plus — it’s Thanksgiving, and no one will really know how much you eat if you fill your plate elsewhere:-) Right?
I’ll be sticking to that story for sure.
I’m looking forward to sitting down with the family and giving thanks. It will be different this year for sure as my husband’s family is still trying to recover from Hurricane Maria in Puerto Rico. It has been a nightmare there, and things just don’t seem to be getting better fast. I have set up a gofundme campaign to help them put their lives back together if anyone is interested in helping my inlaws and stepdaughters directly.
It certainly makes me realize how thankful I am for everything I have — from running water and electricity, to roads that are taken care of and the opportunity to gather with my family over a meal that is not an MRE. (And I’m a veteran, I know MREs)
Thanksgiving. It’s a whole lot more than a pretty table:-)
I’ll be joining:
Oh, wow!!!😲 This is beautiful! And I’m with you on the love of those square plates. Gravy stays put!
Ha!! For sure! Thanks so much Alycia:-)
Just beautiful as always! I love your creativity and use of every day objects and how every tablescape you do is so different. Happy Thanksgiving to you and yours.
Thanks so much Robin! Happy Thanksgiving:-)
This is lovely Anita! Love the colors of the center arrangement, the floor rug and chairs. Looks like you are all set! I like to serve buffet style too. When we’d have large gatherings at my parents it was such a hassle to get everyone fed because we’d always have a 2nd dining table and they’d be coming by to get food from the main table. Either way it’s the gathering and shared time that counts!
Absolutely, Liz! Thanks so much and Happy Thanksgiving!
