I was super excited to find out we were going to get snow before Christmas! It seems like forever that we actually had snow during the season.
The porch this year is a mix of vintage and antique farm things from the property here, ribbons made from torn fabric strips and lots of greenery. It is — I feel, an authentic expression of vintage North Carolina farmhouse:-)
I pulled up another of these little hemlock trees and put it on my grandfather’s sled. Simple gingham fabric forms the skirt.
Wool tartan scarves, faux fur and black and white patterned pillow covers add more color and texture.
I made a very simple, rustic wreath from grapevine and added a bow made from coordinating strips of fabric.
These antique railroad lanterns are from Southern Railroad. Balsam gap is still the highest gauge railroad east of the Rocky Mountains, and this little community was once a bustling railroad town.
Some of you remember for years I have been filling out my faux wreaths with real greenery, but honestly I was not feeling like going through all that this year, so I found these wreaths at Big Lots and decided they were just fine.
This little hand painted sign was a gift many years ago from my cousin, also a musician.
I covered the table with faux fur and added a tray with pine cones and some pine clippings.
I used colored C 7 LED lights around the railings and down the steps. I love that look so much, and it reminds me of my childhood.
My grandmother always gathered greenery and made these sprays then tied them with a strip of red cloth. That’s probably why I prefer to use strips of cloth instead of ribbon because it hangs limp, and I just love that look.
I mixed up the bows using gingham, red dot and a green check to keep things interesting.
I was definitely feeling very nostalgic this year and really wanted my porch to reflect this area, the history and culture and my own family here. I was excited to do red again, then instead of using plaid like I planned, I ended up with strips of cotton fabric, and that really made it unique and personal for me. My grandmother would have done that, and that’s what it’s all about for me.
