If you follow me on facebook, or at whispering.pines.homestead oninstagram, then you’ll know all about my sofa saga. Once I figured out the rescue couch needed to go to my mother’s in order to have space for my mantel, I knew I needed a replacement. I wanted an antique, preferably Duncan Phyfe, or something similar — and in the $200 range. Ha. Right? I had found on facebook marketplace an amazing red velvet Empire Victorian sofa near Clemson, S.C., but the owner waited for days to return my emails, texts and messages and in the meantime, sold it days after I contacted her.
But that was all meant to be.
Because I found this one💝
I contacted the seller, and she told me she was selling it for her aunt, then she gave me her aunt’s number. When I called, the aunt asked what time I could come and mentioned she had to go to church for something that afternoon. Out of curiosity, because I’m a choir director/pianist at a church in the same area, I asked her what church, and when she told me, I mentioned she should know a friend of ours. She then said, “I guess so. I’ve been married to him for years!”
When I found out I was talking to someone I knew, I felt immediately like this was the sofa for me. Even at $375, I thought it was still a bargain for a well-cared-for antique, and knowing it was from a clean home, and had been well taken care of was important to me as well.
Luis and I jumped in my dad’s truck with Cristian and headed over to look. Immediately, I knew it was perfect, so we loaded it up and brought it home. Now, I wish I had video of us getting my huge sofa out of our house and into my mother’s house with my dad’s John Deere and a trailer, but I don’t. It was definitely America’s Funniest Home Videos level funny. In any case, we got our sofa there, and this one in our house.
I could not be happier!! It is an antique and has original springs and down cushions.
What are the chances of finding one that didn’t need reupholstering or cleaning? It had been reupholstered years ago by the same upholsterer I use, and they do a fabulous job.
It’s just perfect for my living room and our friends can rest assured that it is in a good home😊
They collect beautiful antiques so it made me happy to give this one some love.
I knew I wanted it to go in this spot across from the new mantel, and it’s just perfect.
The other one was really too large, and my mother loves it in her house, so it’s a win, win for everybody!!
I kept with the orange/rusts and red for fall and again could not be happier with how it all looks together, and how cozy this room is.
I put the barley twist chairs in front of these windows with my great grandmother’s table.
Be sure to see more of the mantel I made HERE.
I’m so in love with my new living room!
It really has the Victorian parlor feel my grandmother had here in the old house.
And I have a feeling she would love this room.
I’ll be joining:
How could she help but love it!!!! It's gorgeous!
Thanks Mother!!
That's an amazing sofa and it looks beautiful in your room. I love the paisley touches in the room! I think this is my favorite of all the looks you've had in here, it's elegant and chic while obviously cozy. I still can't believe your new fireplace! I keep picturing my husband coming home from work and me saying, Look, honey, I built a fireplace today. He would faint away.
Trust me, Dewena, he did!! He still cannot believe it!
That sofa definitely belongs in your living room! I have followed your blog for a couple of years, and I have loved every change you've made in your living room. I wish I could say the same about my own lol. I absolutely love your fireplace, I think it is my favorite thing in your living room.
Thank you so much Theresa!!
I love your home, with it's cozy colors, antique furniture, and charming eclectic mix of fabrics and decor items! My home is neutral farmhouse style…devoid of deep vibrant hues. I'm going to add some lovely fall pillows and accents like you have in your home. Thank you, for inspiring me! Your fan, Sharon
Thank you so much Sharon!! That is so encouraging, and means so much to me!!
These photos…I am about to swoon. Your room surpasses rich, elegant, warm and inviting. It's total perfection. It's time to compile your decorating style in a book. Plus you have the history and the anecdotes worth narrating.
Oh my goodness, Beverley, that just made my day!! What a sweet thing to say! I would really love to, so who knows!!
Your new mantel looks like it has been there forever. The couch was quite a steal, in my opinion, and is perfect for the room. I've followed you for quite some time and love seeing the changes you make to your home. Such coziness…..
Thank you so much Pat!! I am in love with it!!
Lovely the ruby colors in the whole room, so warm and cozy! It feels like it could hug you!
Thank you so much!!
Anita, the sofa was certainly meant to be! It looks perfect in your room. Wish you had made that video, though! LOL!
Thanks Jane! It worked out so well, and yes that video would have been toooo funny:-)
Your grandmother would love it! I do too. It's adorable. I love your rich red tones.
Aww, thanks Katie:-) I sure hope so!!
I love the sofa Anita! I could sit for days in your gorgeous house!
Thanks so much Christina!!
O MY!! Your Living Room is gorgeous!!! I love the sofa and everything else in the room. The colors are so rich and charming and you can just feel how cozy your room is….. I love ho you hung your curtains…I did the same with my son's Living Room and Bedroom in his apartment. He has huge windows so I hung a third panel in the middle to make it look like 2 windows… Thanks so much for sharing your home with us!!
Hugs,
Deb
Thanks so much Debbie! These actually are two side by side windows on each side, not one:-)
The new sofa is perfect Anita. I think the red velvet would have been too much red. The colors in this sofa really pop with all the other color in the room and the lines on this sofa are just beautiful. Very nice!
Thanks so much Lynda!!
You are so talented! I enjoy your blog. Thanks for sharing. God bless you and your family.
