Hello friends! If you’ve been here long at all you know how much I love to use fabrics to change a look – especially in the kitchen. I’m always making new sink skirts out of scraps of fabric, and for spring, I brought back out a favorite floral.
I bought two yards of this Kaufmann “Queensland” in crimson a few years ago, after falling in love with this beautiful print online at fabricguru.com.
After I first blogged it, people started telling me they had this fabric in the 1990s, having had sofas, curtains, etc., out of this print. Well, I had no idea it was popular in the 1990s, then I started to see it *everywhere* on Facebook Marketplace, old magazine ads, etc. Funny enough, I was not remotely interested in this fabric back then, so even though it was everywhere, it never caught my eye. Go figure.
I love the versatility of this fabric, although it’s bold and red, it has blues, pinks, yellows, oranges and greens so I’ve used it with different accent colors over the last few years.
I’ve also made tea towels out of this fabric, and others, simply to spread a specific color palette around the kitchen.
I thought you might enjoy seeing it used in much larger applications in some photos I found on marketplace…
This was a set of four parsons chairs with a really nice back detail, and they sold very quickly at 4 for $150.
I had saved a late 1990s shopper from Woodward & Lothrop that was full of timeless decorating inspiration when I lived in D.C., and was surprised to find a sofa with this fabric I’d never noticed in there as well.
I also ran across this fabric in some 1990s Country Living and Country Home Christmas magazines I’d saved as well. And even though the 1990s were trending a while back, I can’t really say what goes around comes around because I’m quite sure I’m the only one bringing this fabulous 1990s fabric back, right?!
I think the lesson here is to use what *you* love no matter what. This fabric brings me so much joy when I walk into the kitchen and see it. It literally makes me smile, and in these uncertain days, anything that brings joy, is most welcome.
I’m curious if any of you have something you love to use in your decor that has no expiration date as far as trends go. Please share it with me in the comments below!
About 20 years ago there was a fabric store going out of business here in my home town. I bought a couple of yards of a beautiful floral fabric hoping to use it somewhere. Then the florals seemed to go out of style. Last year I pulled it out and made pillows for my sofa. They were beautiful with my other fall pillows and they made me smile when I walked into my living room. I recently bought a remnant of a red floral fabric similar to the one your are using in your kitchen. It will probably become a lumbar pillow. The red floral makes your kitchen look so happy and inviting. I really enjoyed this post!

Oh I love that!! There really is something happy about a floral☺️ We had a remnant store here until a few years ago so I was able to pick up pieces here and there. I’m so happy to see more florals being used, and pillows, etc., are such a good way to add a pretty floral☺️
Funny. I don’t remember that lol. It is beautiful.

I didn’t either and was surprised when people kept telling me they had it😂😂
Pretty kitchen. Love those
“pops” of color.

Thank you Eileen☺️☺️
I have family room window treatments and some pillows in the Queensland Crimson fabric. I Just love this floral and believe it or not, have never tired of it. It’s so happy and inviting. I have several other prints in my home that I have seen you use in your home. Love the feeling that these fabrics create. I had used a lot of neutrals in the late 80’s but tired of that look. Your post today was so enjoyable.

Oh I’m so jealous☺️☺️ I’ve seen window treatments in that fabric online but always really expensive☺️ Funny because I had neutrals and whites in the late 80s early 90s too and definitely tired of it too☺️☺️
I think decorating should express the owners personality and what they love, instead of trends. I can’t imagine living in a home full or grays, stone, steel, and white. I find it cold, boring and emotionless and without personality. Shopping now is boring—! Here’s to color and gorgeous fabrics, that will never go out of style! Hugs, Sandi

Yes, I cannot imagine either! I always do a little palette cleanser after Christmas, then I can’t wait to add the color back☺️
Hi Anita, This fabric is gorgeous! I have always been a fan of florals. They will never go out of style for me! Beautiful post!

I agree Sally! I sure love this one☺️
Those colors bring me joy too and that red floral has always been a favorite. Your home is always beautiful

Thanks Mom! I do love this one especially too☺️☺️
Yes! I do not apologize that I still have my denim and that flower print couch. I just tell people it’s Ralph Lauren style. Who’s gonna besmirch him?

That’s what I love about Ralph Lauren☺️☺️
I love this floral so much and would definitely use it if I had it! It speaks to my floral loving heart. Seems like I remember these florals. I have been hunting for some fabric to make pillows out of for my living room but haven’t found anything I’m pleased with. I guess I’m not shopping in the right place😉

I definitely miss the remnant shop we had here. It was wonderful and after a fire, they discounted everything regardless of whether it was damaged or not, so I got some beautiful pieces. I browse fabricguru.com mostly and occasionally get to JoAnn’s to look around☺️
I didn’t have this fabric but did have similar ones. I love the rich prints. The only place I have floral prints right now is in our bedroom comforter.

I bet it’s lovely Linda – I love the rich florals too☺️
I love that fabric and would’ve loved to have those chairs and that sofa!

Those chairs went very quickly, of course☺️ I definitely would have loved to have those for my dining table☺️
Well, I’m here to tell you that I’ve always loved that print since the 90’s! Actually my very favorite living room furniture was very similar without the grapes but loaded with big cabbage roses and the sofa and love seat were red too. One of my daughters took the sofa for her first apartment and since she thought is was gross because of the pattern she bought a slip cover for it. Now both the sofa and love seat are long gone I’m sad to say. Bu it looks perfect in your kitchen making it so warm and cozy. I’m not into trends because I buy what I like no matter if it’s out or in. So good idea to encourage everyone to live with what you like!!

Oh it sounds like a wonderful set! My mother had a floral sofa I wish I had too – I think it was my grandmother’s and long gone as well☺️
I love this fabric and with the new trend of Cottagecore in the design world, florals are making a come back!! It looks stunning in your Kitchen!! Thanks so much for sharing!! Stay safe, healthy and happy!!
Hugs,
Debbie

It’s a great pattern☺️☺️
I LOVE This Fabric! Timeless! And the MOST Perfect Red plus floral pattern. I purchased a huge couch and loveseat from Crate & Barrel in the mid 90’s when I worked there – the only way I could afford the furniture was with my employee discount! STILL one of my all time favorite couches & chairs I’ve owed. The more worn that fabric got, the better! After raising 3 Boys and 2 Labs on it, I finally said goodbye to pieces several years back UGH! I love your posts and decorating.

Oh wow!! I have some 1990s Country Living and Country Home magazines I’ve saved for Christmas inspo, and I remember seeing an ad in one a few months ago with that fabric, but couldn’t remember what it was, and it was definitely Crate and Barrel! I love it too☺️☺️
