The thermometer read 49º here this morning, so even though it’s not officially fall yet, it certainly is beginning to feel like it! I absolutely love this time of year and just want it to slow down a bit so I can enjoy it, however, that’s not really possible with a garden and all the canning and preserving that comes with that!
Today, though I’m taking a break from the harvest to join 27 other bloggers all sharing fall home tours coordinated by our friend Marty at A Stroll Thru Life. She does such a fabulous job putting these tours together each season full of wonderful ideas you do not want to miss. They will all be linked below.
I would also like to welcome everyone coming over from Tammy’s beautiful home at Pink Peppermint Design!
Let’s get started:-)
If you’re new, you can find out more about our home and why I do what I do HERE.
One thing I always look forward to is cozying up the house for fall and winter. There is nothing neutral about fall, and I’m here for all the happy color. The warm hues of autumn literally make me smile, and the color inspiration for inside my home is whatever nature offers outside. Our home is not old, but I have spent about ten years restoring and installing the Victorian trim that was carefully saved from great granddaddy’s house when it was, sadly, dismantled in the early 1960s, so I fell in love with Victorian style. Nothing makes me happier than seeing Victorian-inspired and collected cottagecore, dark academia, grandmillenial or “granny-chic” styles trending and so many younger people actually *restoring* older homes now instead renovating the history out of them:-) I love antiques and items that were built when quality mattered, so I love to look through my parents’ attic, and a shopping haul means antique, thrift or garage sale to me.
I’m not a “plastic bins of decor” kind of person, either but instead like to use more practical every day items that can just be swapped out seasonally in addition to anything that can be foraged from outside. That means changing out the window treatments, pillow covers, accessories and adding cozy throws and blankets – to be used for those Sunday afternoon naps:-)
I was a little concerned this room would not have the same cozy feel with the new wall color in here as it did with the dark gray, but even though it’s different, I think it still feels warm and inviting for this season. This is our only living room, so while I want it to look pretty, it also needs to function for us as a family.
I added lots of books, candles for dark nights and rustic arrangements of hydrangeas, goldenrod, sourwood and maple branches.
Candles poured in Depression glass are a great way to recycle and actually use these beautiful pieces. The 1800s oil lamp is on loan from mother.
I changed out the pink and gold pillows from summer for the rust and red velvet pillows and a kilim print. I’ve used these several years now for this season. I also brought back the paisley curtains and velvet lambrequin.
I absolutely adore red and orange together – just as it occurs in nature – especially on my favorite maple trees this season. The vintage Persian rug also combines these colors. Rugs and art, like nature, are wonderful pieces to inspire the color palette in a room – especially for anyone who finds color intimidating.
I love to be surrounded by things that have a story, and great granddaddy’s drop leaf table is filled with such things – books from my aunt, great grandmother’s 1935 portrait, her 1940s radio, a 1970s tole lamp and a favorite book of poetry given to me by my maternal grandmother.
Inherited Chinese ancestor prints hang on windows from the old house backed with vintage sheet music.
Great grandmother’s chaise lounge is the perfect place to relax this fall and winter after all the gardening and harvesting is done.
I moved these antique bird prints here for summer, and loved the colors for this season as well.
Maple leaves are in an inherited antique brass tea pot from India.
My grandmother didn’t like this print, so I remember it hanging in the basement in her sewing room. More than 100 years old, it is A Child from the Campagna, by German artist Guido Bach.
My daughter gifted me the gold kilim pillows for Christmas, and I used them on the couch with pink all summer. I had planned to use them in the girls’ room for winter, but liked this one here for fall with a red chenille one I made a few years back. The afghan was made by a close family friend in the 1970s, and the colors just couldn’t be more fabulous.
I hope you enjoyed seeing how I use things I have to change a look, and I hope you’re inspired to look around your own home for things you might not have used in a while that could give your space a fresh, new look. No matter what style you prefer, it really doesn’t take constantly buying new or trendy decor to have a beautiful and inviting home.
Thanks so much for stopping by! Be sure to visit Julia at Cuckoo4Design next for a totally different style and some beautiful fall ideas☺️

Thank you so much Julia!! Can’t wait to visit you!
I love your fall touches and colors. They seem to be the perfect season for your lovely home. I have always been a light and bright kinda girl but your home makes me want to curl up and read which is my favorite thing to do. This season for the first time in years and years I actually added dark green velvet curtains to the living room. It completely changes the room so I can see why you love those rich colors. I also am infatuated with your double hung artwork. Everything is beautiful and I think adding the trim from your grandparents house is amazing. Love your historic soul.

Thank you so much Laura☺️☺️
Absolutely stunning! You are truly gifted in this area … I have a question … is that a real fire in the antique stove? I think, if not, that it could be a great idea for me as I miss having a “fire” in the living room (although we have a German stove that heats the entire house so I still have wood burning – just not in the living room) and could put an antique mantle over it … brilliant!
Also, are the oil lamps on the walls antique or newer?
Thank you!
Author
Thank you so much! The lamps are actually newer, and I bought them from Antique Lamp Supply online several years ago. I had some antique brackets but I couldn’t find fonts that fit so I bought the entire thing there, and they had the best price anywhere. Also the little stove is an early 1900s Perfection Kerosene heater, and although it is in working order, we don’t use it because they are not as efficient and will definitely smoke up a house – daddy says these did in the old house☺️ I either put a votive in there or a battery powered candle on a timer☺️☺️
Perfect!! Thank you!

I love everything about your style. I am a new subscriber and can’t wait to see your home through the seasons. I wish I had a wooded area to walk thru and gather nature. Also there is a pillow I am crushing on .. it showed at 5:33 and 9:29 on your grandmothers chaise. Its the red textured woven one. Do you have a link for that?
Author
Thank you so much Liane!! That pillow is one I’m pretty sure I got from Wayfair about four years ago, but I didn’t see it on the website currently. If I see it anywhere, I’ll let you know☺️☺️
What color are your living room walls?
And I love the idea of green velvet curtains!!
Author
The color is called “Salt Fork” and was originally a Colorplace color made by Sherwin Williams for Walmart. Either they discontinued Colorplace or they’re having supply issues, but I had to have it mixed in Lowe’s Valspar Express coat, but it’s not quite as warm as the original, but still a lovely color☺️
