Hello friends! I wanted to share a few things I found in my parents’ attic right before Christmas.
I was helping my mother get her Christmas decor from the attic when we spotted a bowl and pitcher in a corner on the floor.
Apparently my grandmother used this in the old house, and I assume it’s been stored here since the old house was dismantled and the new one was built.
I was so excited to find it and knew it would be just perfect here under the old medicine cabinet.
I think it will look fabulous this summer when I bring out the quilt my great aunts made for me with these same colors. These are the kinds of things so many people would donate or throw out that I treasure, and hopefully one of my children will treasure this someday also.
My maternal grandmother crocheted this beautiful runner, and I love it here on this Victorian hand-carved chest of drawers.
Y’all know I also found something else to use while going through the attic, of course. I noticed this quilt, and although it’s not old – probably 1990s-early 2000s, I thought the colors would be so nice for winter, and add some warmth to this room. This is one my mother bought, I would guess from JCPenny, so I asked to borrow it.
I also brought out the velvet duvet cover I bought several years ago because I just loved the touch of red.
I’m loving how the dried hydrangeas from our gardens look with this color combination as well.
Everything ties in with the cushion on the antique Harden settle – also from the old house.
I also added some pillows I made in neutral shades.
I love this room all dressed for winter, but what I love most are all the things that tell a story – the wood trim and doors I painstakingly restored and installed, the antique bed I restored, grandmother’s trunk, bowl and pitcher, great grandmother’s quilt, art painted by my late uncle, inherited furniture, etc. All of these things by themselves might have been thrown out, but all together, with a little love and work, they tell the story of my family. And that makes all the hard work worth it, because the reality is, I put this room together with hard work, not money.
Let me know in the comments below what things you treasure – whether they’re from family members or not☺️
Hi Anita, Such a sweet and cozy bedroom. Paying honor to your family is the best part!! They must have been very special people to continue to be loved through the generations. When my cousin sold her parent’s home after my aunt and uncle passed (I loved them dearly), my cousin gave me my aunt’s pitcher but the bowl broke before I could get it. So I looked around in antique stores and found one that I thought would match the creamy white pitcher. It turned out to be a perfect match (maybe my aunt had something to do with me going to that shop!! She too loved decorating). It looked just like the old bowl. I put it away but your post reminded me of it, so I’m going to put it out in the Spring!! Thanks for the reminder!! Your pitcher and bowl are just beautiful and that quilt, so pretty!!

Thank you Lucy☺️☺️
Anita, your mother sure has saved a lot from the old house. Your parents are amazing. It is wounderful that you appreciate all the vintage things. Adult children today don’t seem to know how to appreciate family things. I’m a seventy eight mother and I have a lot of my grandparents, parents and in-laws things. I decorate like you do. When you share your home I get excited. When you found those oil lamps, what a joy! You are so talented! May God bless you, your family, mother and daddy.

Thank you so much Susan☺️☺️
What such heartfelt sentiments you have written. I agree that in today’s society often little regard is given to old items, items that once were treasured. You have such a special love and appreciation for such beautiful items. Blessings to you and yours.

Thank you so much, and many blessings to you as well❤️☺️
What lovely treasures to find, and how beautifully you put them together <3 I have only a few things from my parents and grandparents but I treasure them also. A few of my favorites my mom's lacquer jewelry box from Japan (my dad was stationed there in the 50's), a quilt my grandmother made from feed sacks (scraps from making clothes out of the feed sacks during the depression), and a bonnet my grandmother made also from feed sacks. The quilt has some tattered areas that I'm working on repairing with reproduction fabric. I want to keep using it, and I think my grandmother would approve of it being repaired so it can continue to keep us warm. It makes me happy to see how you value your family's history instead of chasing the latest 'in' design thing. I think that's what makes your style timeless <3

Oh my goodness sounds like you have some wonderful things! I’m sure your grandmother would be very happy to see you repairing something so special instead of throwing it out like so many do these days☺️☺️
Anita, your rooms and designs are always inspiring. Your talents shine with each season and how you gather the inherited items to create new looks. I also have my grandmother’s bowl and pitcher. It is large and I’ve thought it was hard to use, but I have new ideas now that a new season is here. Thanks for sharing your home!

Thank you Nancy☺️☺️
Hi Anita, I can only imagine the fun and feelings of nostalgia you must experience when you come across treasure’s like your grandmother’s pitcher & wash basin. I’ve always been fond of them! Your grandmothers crochet dresser scarf is beautiful! I taught myself to crochet a couple years ago when I was bound to my chair due to a physical trauma. I’m definitely still in the learning stages though. You’ve created such a lovely cozy atmosphere, full of rich history…it doesn’t get any better than that in my opinion.

Thank you so much Carol☺️☺️ I am always so happy to find something new I never knew one of them used, and so happy that I can keep and love these items instead of them going to a thrift shop, etc.☺️☺️ I crocheted and knitted as a young girl but haven’t done it in years☺️☺️
Your room is absolutely right up my ally. I love the fact you love old treasures and dark woods. So many today are just using modern, white and the homes all look the same. Thank you for sharing.
