Hello friends! I say it every year, but oh how this season just flies by. I feel like I need to savor every moment. I’m back with my kitchen decorated for Christmas. I actually did not go all out in here like I usually do, but I wanted to recreate the feel the set of The Waltons has – simple, 1930s kitchen, very similar to my grandparents’ kitchen here during the same period.
Back a few months ago, I had painted the inside of one cabinet the same blue as the walls, and put back on the glass doors. I also built the little white shelf as on the set, and I found on eBay one of the props, a Metlox Poppytrail Rooster salt cellar.
I found a very similar fabric to the one used on the set for a sink skirt and curtains. Although the scale is larger, the colors are almost the same, and the print is very similar. I thought it would be a nice change and still incorporate the pinks/burgundies as well as the green and blue shades.
I attached paper snowflakes my children and husband made years ago to the window. It really looks lovely at night when it’s dark outside, and this reminds me of something we did in elementary school.
I added some white pine and my grandmother’s angel to the shelves.
I cut a little hemlock from the woods and stuck it in wet floral foam to hang some of the ornaments my children made.
I love using vintage calendars for the coordinating year, and bought several of these Currier and Ives calendars probably 12-13 years ago. I love getting them out again as those same years repeat.
I found the tray at my local antique mall for about $14 and love that it continues the black and the coordinating colors in this room.
The Metlox Poppytrail Rooster salt cellar was $12 on eBay,and missing the wood lid. My husband has promised to make a lid for me:-)
Feedsack towels from granddaddy’s store keep the simple farmhouse feel.
I kept the table much simpler than I usually do, here is last year’s table, and added a green check tablecloth, like on the Waltons, along with my oil lamps and great grandmother’s cruet set.
The quilt is an antique and made from flour sacks.
On the buffet, I set up some fruit, nuts, candy and all the extras for hot chocolate for my son.
I love the idea of a tablecloth, but we use our table so much I ended up folding the tablcloth into a runner. It just works better this way, plus I like to see the wood.
Mother always buys a large poinsettia for me, and the piano is about the only place I have for something so large.
The commodore Candy Cane and “spaghetti” angels belonged to my grandmother and are very special for me to get out every year.
I love how the kitchen came out, and am looking forward to all my family gathered around the table:-)
Be sure to watch the video tour, which shows a lot of the inspiration for the kitchen as well as a special, traditional Appalachian cake:-)
If you missed the living room, you can see that HERE.
Everything looks so lovely and cozy. I watched your beautiful video too. Your home is one I can picture pulling up to with the snow falling all around and stopping by for a visit, talking over a cup of coffee or tea and not wanting to leave. I adore all of it esp the way you decorated this year. You’re so talented. The light fixture over your table makes me drool, love the sideboard and would absolutely love to be to put a chair in my kitchen like you have 😍

Thank you so much for that Cheryl:-) That light was about $60, which is a steal, but I found it on marketplace and could not let it go by. I’ve been looking forever, and those are usually $350+, so I knew I’d never be able to afford one then this popped up – at an antique store no less.
Each kitchen version you show I think is my favorite but this one inspired by the Walton kitchen truly is. I do love the touches of blue–that sifter!–but the Poppytrail Rooster salt cellar is a sweet find. Poppytrail Rooster was my everyday china wedding pattern back in 1961 and I loved it for many decades until we downsized a few years ago. The Spode Blue Bird that was my “nice” wedding china pattern came with me, being saved for a granddaughter some day. I love that you have a comfy chair in the kitchen and a piano, gracious sakes! I had a large harvest table in my farm kitchen that now has to be in the dining area of our great room but I sure do miss dinners in the kitchen and spreading out all my cookbooks on it for decades. You gave me the great idea of folding a tablecloth into a runner because I have a closet of them hanging but it’s so much trouble changing them daily. I’ll get up and get out a vintage Christmas cloth and do just that. I enjoy your YouTube channel so much but I watch it on my TV and can’t figure out how to leave feedback there. Your voice is lovely on the videos.
A merry Christmas to you, Dewena

Oh Wow Dewena, I love that Rooster pattern and was so happy to find that:-) Yes, the dining table should be where the piano is, but when you have a baby grand, it has to go somewhere. I’d really like to get an upright just for space, but for now it’s there. Yes the tablecloth drove me crazy because I also use the table when I’m cooking and it worked out great to just fold it:-)
Merry Christmas friend!!
Anita,
Your kitchen touches my heart strings. It reminds me of my grandmother’s kitchen. I love that you have leaned into the Walton’s theme. I too watched the show for years, and loved it. I have copied your sink skirt and dish cloth line. They make such a quaint scene in my kitchen. I look forward to your posts, and wish there were more. Your videos are always so inspiring and your voice is lovely and soothing. Merry Christmas to you and yours.

I’m so happy to hear you were inspired to copy the skirt and towels:-) Merry Christmas to you as well!!
Anita, lovely as always. I too am a Waltons fan and love what you’ve done to incorporate that feel into your kitchen. I have to say I would give almost anything to have that paisley? chair!!! I keep checking Marketplace for something similar. The music was also just lovely. Would you share the name of the CD? Thank you and Blessed Merry Christmas to you and your family, from Michigan.

Thank you Pamela!! The music is all from a company that makes background music for content creators:-) There’s a short clip my husband played, but the rest is all stock music:-)
I always love each of your videos and especially this one! Loved the Waltons and kitchen scenes. Your kitchen makes me feel like I stepped back in time when things were so much more innocent. Your voice and the music just set the video off!
Merry Christmas!
