Hello friends! I’m so excited because this is my favorite season! I look forward to fall, and winter too, all year. It makes me happy when September comes, and the sun comes in the house at a different angle. There’s something special about the light and shadows this time of year that I love.
Today, I’m sharing my living room decorated for fall, and I’m linking with a group of super-talented bloggers also sharing fall decor this week, so be sure to check out all the links at the bottom of this post. Thanks again to Marty at A Stroll Thru Life for putting these seasonal tours together! Welcome to everyone coming over from Jenn’s amazing home at Clean and Scentisible.
Friends, autumn is not neutral – it’s colorful and rich, think Carolina blue skies, red oak leaves, gold and orange maples, golden rod, orange pumpkins, even white hydrangeas turning rich shades of magenta and aubergine. I love the warm feel of those colors and always like to have the inside of my home reflect what’s going on outside. I don’t have bins of fall decor, so as usual, I used things I already had with color, texture, and of course leaves and flowers from outside.
First, I am so glad I painted the room this shade of gray, Grand Smoky Mountain (old Colorplace color at Walmart) last winter. I have used this shade for years here on trim and cabinetry, but this is the first time on walls, and I love it. It’s especially nice for fall, and that’s one reason I decided to go ahead and paint. I just think its fabulous with the warm tones of fall.
I changed out my pillow covers to some I’ve had forever, the kilim pillows as well as the orange and red velvet.
I always use old books for decor because I like decor to be mostly things that are useful.
My grandfather was a school teacher, and this was the bell he rang:-)
I found this lap blanket at the Salvation Army for $3.99 and could not pass it up. The fall colors are just perfect!
I’m still loving the red tole lamp I found on Marketplace last spring. I knew it would be perfect with the Chinese ancestors, as well as the antique channel-back chairs mother reupholstered in the paisley fabric.
I cherish this painted photo of my great grandmother from 1921.
For the mantel, I wanted to hang some pressed leaves over the print like I did about 10 years ago.
I put some plates I picked up in Bolivia in the plate rack, and love the fall colors they bring in.
I added some sourwood leaves to an antique vase. These are my favorite early fall leaf because they keep well in water and turn before anything else here. I also added a Navajo vase, Cherokee black pottery, and some little pumpkins and gourds from my garden.
I feel like I achieved a cozy, fall look but I didn’t do it with stereotypical *fall* decor. My go to items are always pillow covers, throws, foliage from outside along with books and candles.
I have said for many years that a home should tell the story of the people who live there, and the way to do that is with unique personal items that tell that story. And you can’t buy that in a store, you have to put it together over time in layers. That kind of home will stand the test of time and never go out of style:-)

Anita,
Absolutely gorgeous and right on spot with the new decorating trends of Moody Romantic and Cottage Chic that have taken You Tube, Instagram and tik tok by storm…I keep saying that my style is finally back in style and so is yours…Unfortunately , most Bloggers are still stuck in the all white and uncluttered looks of the past…Your home is always such a treat to see and Kudos to you for sticking with what you love and not following decorating trends….Your home is stunning!!

Absolutely gorgeous Anita! It is all so beautiful and cozy for fall. I especially love your use of red and creative vignettes.
Happy fall!
Anita,
Your fall home is so cozy. It was just made for the fall and winter seasons. The gray wall color is perfect and contrasts nicely against the jeweled tones. Your NC home is such a treasure. Be safe with all the rain we are expecting from the hurricane.
Hi Anita. I keep thinking of you and wondering how you fared after Hurricane Helene. Did you have a lot of damage where you are? I have family in east Tennessee and have heard so much about the devasting damage there and in western North Carolina. I hope that you and yours are safe. Patricia

Thank you for asking! We are fine and very thankful! We did have flooding from our creek but our house is fine. It is devastating to see what’s happened all around the mountains though.
Anita, your home is always a delight. I love the history. Are you okay after the hurricane ?
Author
Thank you so much!! Yes, we are fine, with just damage to our driveway and bridge but nothing compared to what happened all around.
Hi Anita, I’m writing this on 10-4-24 to make sure your home, area, family and friends are NOT affected by this horrible storm. Not sure if you are seeing this but prayers for everyone!

Thank you for asking! I didn’t have internet until yesterday, and it’s still spotty. I was using my phone as a hotspot, but was unable to pull up these messages. Thanks for your prayers!!
