Farmhouse Christmas Kitchen – Inspired by the Waltons

Hello everyone! I’m back with my kitchen decorated for Christmas, and just like last year, I wanted to bring the vintage charm from the set of The Waltons to my kitchen. Y’all know I love that kitchen, and have tried to incorporate some of those elements into my own kitchen.

How I do that is by picking some elements that are easy enough to incorporate into the kitchen I have – some of the set props, colors, fabrics, etc., that create the vintage feel the set had.

I bought this fabric last year, and it’s actually very similar to one they used in later seasons of the show.

One specific item from the set I got last year was this Metlox Poppytrail Rooster salt cellar. Mine is missing the lid, just as the one on the show is. These were actually made in the 1960s, so later than the 1930s time period the show is.

I like to use anything I find here on the property that belonged to my grandparents, or came from granddaddy’s store. Daddy found the Magic Yeast box a few years back and knew I’d love to use it.

This year I really wanted to use the red transferware. They have it on the show in a cabinet by the back porch door. I combined it with my brown drip and vintage McCoy Pine Cone pottery.

I do love having a comfy spot to sit in the kitchen, and everyone loves to sit here.

On The Waltons, the door off the kitchen led to a kitchen area where they actually prepared the food they ate on the show. Mine leads to my pantry and laundry room, which got a big makeover this summer.

The angel candleholders and the Commodore candy cane belonged to my grandmother, and I always remember her having them on the window sill in the house here.

A little hot chocolate station for the kids🙂

This has been such great extra counter space, and the storage is so much better than the hodgepodge of shelves we had there before.

On the show, they mostly used a green check (plastic) tablecloth and a blue and white check on some special occasions. I used my green check last year, but decided to use this plaid one this year. It’s similar, plus I prefer a runner so I just folded it to use it as a runner.

I wanted a really simple centerpiece, not like the intricate ones I’ve created in the past, so I decided on the Old Britain Castles soup tureen mother gave me and thought that would be a perfect for Olivia Walton’s Christmas table.

I borrowed the vintage quilt from mother because I thought the colors were perfect.

I kept my buffet really simple with grandmother’s yule log and the same vintage Christmas cards I hang up every year. Three of them are from my childhood, and I’m so glad I still have them!

The oil lamp belonged to my great grandfather who originally bought this property in the 1920s, and the window is from the old house.

I kept the piano area simple as well with just the poinsettia mother brought me, a vintage iron candle holder I always have here, and a Nativity from my childhood.

I closed up the pump organ and used it to display the model I made years ago of the old house daddy grew up in here. All of the wood trim, beadboard, doors, etc., we’ve been installing in our house came from there.

This is the tree where I display ornaments and snowflakes my kids and husband made, some mother gave me, crocheted ornaments my grandmother made, glass ornaments I bought in Germany, and some of my vintage Shiny Brites.

Some of these tartan bows, I’ve had for probably 30 years. I made the popcorn garlands and orange slices years ago and just wrap them up in plastic every year and save them. They have kept really well.

The little snowmen sled is something I bought probably at Walmart when my first baby was a little girl, around 24 years ago, and it is just a special thing I love to have out.

I brought out the Turkish rug for the living room, and also this one that I bought in Turkey in 1999. The colors are just so wonderful for Christmas.

I also made “Olivia’s Applesauce cake” because I wanted to try it. I used the recipe from Earl Hamner’s book, The Homecoming, and it turned out really well. It was definitely much better after sitting over night, and I substituted the icing for a cream cheese glaze. According to Judy Norton, who payed Mary Ellen, the cast never actually ate applesauce cake on set. She has a video where she’s making it for the first tine as well. Daddy cracked some of our black walnuts, and I used the applesauce I canned from my pappaw Chandler’s apple trees I canned this summer, and that definitely contributes to that Appalachian feel the TV show had.

I have a video up on my channel with some winter vlogging, making the cake and the reveal of the kitchen so be sure to check that out!

Thanks for stopping by friends!! I’ll be back next week with a porch post and video, so be sure you are subscribed to the channel and following here🙂
